Sandspruit Walk

This project aims to clear and maintain a 2km path along the Sandspruit River for walkers, bird-watchers and cyclists to enjoy the in this suburb of Johannesburg.

12 January 2017

Together with our partners at Friends of Sandspruit we have taken up another great project to get the local community engaged with nature on our doorsteps.

The map below illustrates the walk we are planning to create. For the most part, the area is wide enough to accommodate two paths offering a different view as you walk from Ernest Ullmann Park to South Road and back.

Sandspruit Walk Map

We recommend taking the Eastern route on the way to South Road (lower route on the map). It is less scenic as it follows the outer boundary of the area close to walls and fences. On the return leg, take the Western route along the river.

The entire circuit, starting and ending at our sign board in Ullmann Park is a few metres short of 2km.

Have a look at the photo gallery at the bottom of this page for a quick walk through of the area and then get yourselves and your families out there in person. You will find that we have uncovered plenty of litter in the areas we have mowed, so if possible, please help out by taking a bag with you and collect a bit of litter each time. It would be much appreciated as we just don't have the manpower to do everything.

For a full picture diary of the garden please see the below.

Please help... This worthwhile community project requires constant maintenance to keep it alive. We cannot provide the labour, equipment and consumables without your assistance. Please help us where you can...

When walking, you see things that you miss in a motor car or on the train. You give your mind space to ponder.
